About Recycled Pets
The idea came from an iguana.
In the autumn of 2021, our founder Hudson Vanderkamp lost an iguana named Octavius. He had lived with Hudson for twenty-two years. He could open the refrigerator. The grief, when it came, was unlike anything Hudson had been prepared for.
In the months that followed — out of a small home kitchen in Carmel Valley — Hudson began developing a framework he would later call the Continuum: a set of practices and small artisanal rituals through which a companion's bond could be deliberately, lovingly, carried forward. Friends came. Then friends of friends. Then a quiet network of households across the country.
By 2023, what had started as a kitchen-table practice had become Recycled Pets — a certified bond continuation service, with three named tiers, a six-person team, and a growing library of peer-reviewed research underwriting every step of the process.
